Public Exhibition: Home and the People Who Live There

FotoFest
1818 Washington Avenue, Houston, TX
February 20 - May 30, 2021

Home and the people who live there is a meditation on the concepts of home and community, featuring artists included in the FotoFest Biennial 2020 exhibition Ten by Ten: Ten Reviewers Select Ten Portfolios from the Meeting Place. For the artists, home is not simply a place, but rather a space of belonging, where the intimate and personal are the fabric of everyday life. The artists turn their lenses toward the various aspects that comprise the architecture of such a place: personal histories, friendships, kinships through community, support and acceptance.

Home and the people who live there was presented on the facades of buildings located in Arts District Houston and it included artworks by Citlali Fabián, Anton Gautama, Krista Svalbonas, and Daniel Handal.

In this recorded conversation hosted by FotoFest, I speak with Karen Haas, Lane Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, about my photographic series Pajaritos, featured in the exhibition. The discussion explores how the series reclaims the pejorative term “Pajaro”—used in Latin America to belittle queer men—by transforming it into a celebration of individuality and beauty through portraits of colorful songbirds.
